“For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the shepherd and overseer of you souls,” 1 Peter 2:25
Ten years ago, if you ever told me that I’d be a “woman of God” I’d think you were CRAZY, there’s absolutely no way. You were more likely to find me at a club two or three times a week with a double rum and coke in my hand dancing to Destiny’s Child at 4am than at church on a Sunday morning. God really is a deliverer!! I was once lost in sin but God led me back to him step by step. This didn’t happen over night, it’s been a long journey of transformation and change which has been hard and frustrating at times but its been worth it. I had an encounter with God which disrupted my dysfunctional but comfortable world, messed up MY plans and led me on a journey of faith, love, forgiveness and trust.
This Christian walk isn’t easy. As much as we love God there are times when we can be tired, distracted, discouraged, disappointed and unintentionally get lost along the way.
No one talks about it but we can be in a place where LIFE happens and it’s a struggle to find the words to pray, read God’s word, make it to church and early morning devotions turn into a quick 10 min prayer on route to work. What was once easy and effortless becomes difficult.
You’ll know you’ve lost your way spiritually when over time you gradually go from being on fire for God to being lacklustre, lazy and indifferent. The passion for the things of God dwindle and are replaced with the distractions of earthly/fleshly pursuits that promise to satisfy but they always leave a void.
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it,” Matthew 7:23-14.
We are all on a journey and are walking down different paths which is why we cannot compare our life or our walk with God with other people. Its a waste of time!!! During our own walk with God following instructions that are in his word and following the leadership of the Holy Spirit can be compared to making the decision to walk through narrow or wide gates. No one can force us, the gate we choose to walk through is entirely up to us.
The wide gate is spacious, roomy and everyone else walks through it because it’s easier and requires little or no effort and there is safety in numbers. We can easily justify walking through the wide gate because “Everyone else is walking though it and they seem fine,” but Matthew 7: 13 says that it “leads to destruction.” But the small gate is narrow which means it takes time, discipline, obedience and effort to walk through it and that gate “leads to life and only a few find it,” Matthew 7:14.
On my journey, I went through numerous wide and narrow gates over the years….decisions, decisions, decisions. I was distracted and got lost too many times to mention. When I was eventually led to the narrow gate it was so small that not everyone could go through with me. I had to make the decision to go forward into the unknown world of having a relationship with God!!
Unfortunately, as painful as it was the boyfriends had to go because they were leading me away from God. I had to say bye to some friends who still wanted me to go with them to the club, they didn’t understand my journey. Quite frankly, I didn’t understand it either, I just had to keep walking forward following God. The bad attitude, wrong way of thinking and clothes that were a bit too short or too tight had to be left at the narrow gate in order for me to walk through. It’s going to cost you something!!!! Too many people want to take their baggage with them and they can not fit through the narrow gate which is why few people walk through it.
Just like sheep its possible for us to go through the wide gate and go astray and get lost unintentionally. No one plans to get lost!!! But it happens.
I left home a few weeks ago to get into my car to see my niece and nephew who live in Essex. I walked up and down my road but I could find my car. At that point, I panicked. My car wasn’t on my road or the surrounding roads. I LOST my car!! I went back to my flat and called the police to report it as stolen.
The next day I got a call from the police, the whole family nervously huddled around my phone to hear what they had to say. The police FOUND MY CAR it was parked round the corner from my house. They have a tracking system that found it. I couldn’t believe it, I thought I’d never get it back. Turns out it wasn’t stolen, I completely forgot where I’d parked it since I hardly drive my car. I can’t believe I lost my own car!!!!!!!! Either way, I was extremely thankful that my car was once lost and was now found!!!
In the same way that the police could trace my lost Volkswagen Polo with their tracker system. We have the Holy Spirit which tracks us where ever we go. We can never stray too far away. Even when we are disobedient, ignore God’s instruction to do our own thing, when we make the wrong decisions and go astray God knows exactly where we are and is able to lead us back to relationship with him. “For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the shepherd and overseer of you souls,” 1 Peter 2:25.
The word of God is our guide in life but if we don’t study it and more importantly apply it than its very easy to get lost along the way. The Word of God illuminates and guides us on the path God has set us on which leads us to the narrow gate. This is why David said: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” Psalm 119:105. Thank God for his word!!!!
The pathway that leads to the narrow gate is to spend time with God DAILY in prayer and in his word. If your ever find yourself lost you can find direction in God’s word. It’s through a decision DAILY to surrender and be led by the Holy Spirit our helper, comforter, advocate, intercessor, counsellor and strengthener (John 14:26).
As we walk with God and allow him to order our steps we’ll look up and be in awe of how far God has brought us. The best is yet to come!!!!!!!!!!
God is faithful!! Trust him!!
